A wealthy Santa Rosa widow who had a soft spot in her heart for 4-H kids, cows and agriculture left a sizeable bequest that launched the 4-H Foundation of Sonoma County.

Today, the 4-H Foundation, a non-profit corporation established in 1982, is the community’s primary financial vehicle for supporting, promoting and enhancing the Sonoma County 4-H program.

It was the late Rosalie C. Rohr’s large and unexpected bequest in 1981 that brought community leaders together to begin discussions that would eventually lead to establishment of the 4-H Foundation of Sonoma County. Mrs. Rohr, the widow of Santa Rosa physician Dr. Silas M. Rohr, died on Nov. 15, 1978, at the age of 101 following a long and colorful life as a Santa Rosa socialite and philanthropist.

Throughout her life Mrs. Rohr supported agricultural youth organizations in Sonoma County. Additionally, she annually presented cash awards to the top Guernsey cattle breeders in the junior show at the Sonoma County Fair.

The Rohr estate, valued at $1 million at the time of her death, was left in a trust administered by Wells Fargo Bank. Mrs. Rohr’s will stipulated that the annual income from the trust was to be divided equally among four beneficiaries including the Sonoma County 4-H program. The other beneficiaries were the Sonoma County FFA program and two scholarships, one for Santa Rosa agriculture students at U.C. Davis and the other a music scholarship at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

It was estimated that the annual income from the Rohr trust would be $15,000 to $17,000 for each of the four beneficiaries. Because the Sonoma County 4-H Foundation did not exist at the time, the money from the Rohr estate was to be held by the California 4-H Foundation, specifically to foster 4-H activities in Sonoma County.

4-H supporters believed Sonoma County 4-H needed its own foundation to receive the annual income from the Rohr trust and other bequests in the future. Members of the initial committee were Shirley Dempel, Harriet Polansky, Bob Sisson, Coston Crouse and Jim Groom. The committee met for more than a year to lay the groundwork for the foundation, which would became the legal entity to hold, administer and distribute charitable contributions directed to the Sonoma County 4-H program.

Mrs. Rohr’s generous bequest was the first but not the last to benefit Sonoma County 4-H Club members.

Rich and Saralee Kunde, the undisputed first couple of Sonoma County agriculture and staunch supporters of farm youth programs, are the first recipients of the 4-H Foundation of Sonoma County’s Shining Star Award for their dedication and support of the county’s 4-H program.

The award was presented at the 4-H Foundation’s “Harvest at the 4-H Corral” barbecue and auction held on Sept. 19 at the Kundes’ Richard’s Grove and Saralee’s Vineyard on Slusser Road in Windsor. Each year the Kundes offer their spectacular vineyard estate as the venue for the 4-H Foundation’s fund-raising event. There were more than 600 people at this year’s barbecue and auction. Proceeds from the event are used for a number of purposes including 4-H scholarships, grants, leadership training and to maintain the 4-H Center in Rohnert Park. The 4-H Center, owned and managed by the 4-H Foundation, is the only 4-H Center of its kind in California.

The Kundes received a large magnolia tree to plant on their vineyard estate. The tree was accompanied by a plaque that said, “Richard and Saralee Kunde – Thank you for your generosity in helping our 4-H youth to blossom.”

The Shining Star Award was established by the 4-H Foundation to recognize individuals or businesses that have made extraordinary contributions to 4-H. In addition to providing Richard’s Grove and Saralee’s Vineyard as the site of the annual barbecue, Rich and Saralee have supported the 4-H program in countless ways over the last 30 years. They were leading donors to the building fund for the 4-H Center in Rohnert Park with Saralee serving as co-chairman of the $300,000 capital campaign for the 4-H Center. The campaign was called, “Complete the Dream” and in 11 months Saralee helped raise $300,000 for the 4-H Center, which was completed in August 1994.

“Around Sonoma County, Saralee is known as the Unsinkable Saralee because nothing phases her and everything seems possible,” said Tim Tesconi, a director of the 4-H Foundation who made the presentation.

“In addition to providing their ranch and resources, Rich and Saralee bring an unfettered spirit, energy and respect to anything they do or any cause they support,” added Tesconi.

Saralee and Richard Kunde grow grapes on more than 300 acres in the Windsor area, selling their premium wine grapes to more than a dozen wineries. Saralee serves in many leadership capacities including holding posts as a director of the Sonoma County Fair, 4-H Foundation of Sonoma County and the Russian River Valley Winegrowers. She is the dairy leader for the Green Valley 4-H Club.

Rich Kunde, member of a pioneering Sonoma County ranching family, is recognized as one of the pivotal figures in shaping and preserving Sonoma County agriculture over the last half century. A man of the land, Rich has spent his life cultivating the soil and nurturing the rural lifestyle that makes Sonoma County such a special place.

The Kundes have two children, Matt and Catie. Matt was a 4-H member for many years. Catie is a member of the Green Valley 4-H Club and the Forestville FFA.

Presentations are not just demonstrations. You have many options ranging from traditional demonstrations to problem solving for senior members. All of the various presentation styles require similar skills, but are designed to meet the interests and age-appropriate levels of the member. No style of presentation is better than any other.
Liberty Beekeeping – Where children can learn to be calm around bees! This project provides children with simple, easy to read literature to begin with. They learn why honey bees live in the colony, what the life cycles of the queen, the workers and the drone are. They learn the parts and functions of the bees and also the hive they live in. A good beginning project is building a bee hive. The parts can be ordered from several bee supply stores on line or locate a nearby store that carries them. The Liberty 4-H beekeeper group in Sonoma County, California, learned how to build the boxes and wire the frames in their first two meetings. Some of the 4-H children ordered bees and some relied on the leaders’ swarm catching skills. Learning the difference between caring for the two different colonies was their next lesson.
